If you’re looking for a mix of jungle adventures and relaxing beach days, Belize is the perfect destination for you. In just four days, we went from deep jungle adventures to laid-back island life — and somehow it felt like the perfect balance between adrenaline and slowing down.
Our journey started near San Ignacio, where we stayed at Lower Dover Jungle Lodge, an eco lodge surrounded by jungle sounds and nature. Waking up there felt like stepping into another world. The owner of Lower Dover had several dogs running around the property, which gave the place a very warm and homey atmosphere. We chose to stay here because it is located close to the famous Actun Tunichil Muknal — better known as the ATM Cave. Without a doubt, it was the most adventurous activity of the entire trip.
We spent half a day exploring the cave, and when I say exploring, I mean crawling, swimming, climbing, and squeezing through narrow passages while surrounded by ancient Mayan history. The ATM Cave isn’t the kind of place you simply “visit” — you truly experience it. At some points, the only light came from our helmets, reflecting against the water and cave walls around us. It felt surreal from start to finish and honestly became one of the most unforgettable experiences I’ve ever had. One important thing to know before visiting: photography and videos are not allowed inside the ATM Cave, as flashes and equipment could damage the ancient Mayan artefacts.
After all the adventure and adrenaline, we slowed things down with a cacao workshop in San Ignacio, where locals showed us how chocolate is made from scratch — from roasting cacao beans to grinding everything by hand. And yes, tasting freshly made chocolate at the different stages of the process somehow made the experience even better.
After two days on the mainland, we left the jungle behind and headed to Belize City to catch a ferry to the dreamy island of Caye Caulker. The second we arrived, everything slowed down. Think crystal-clear water, barefoot days, colorful streets, and sunsets that genuinely don’t look real. There are no cars on the island — only golf carts and bicycles — which adds even more to the relaxed atmosphere. From the harbor, we decided to walk to our hostel, Travelers Palm Backpackers. We spent our days slowly exploring the island and snorkeling with sharks, turtles, eagle rays, and even manatees.
If you want to do something extra special, you can also book a helicopter flight over the famous Great Blue Hole (around 500 BZD). I personally decided to skip it because it felt a little too expensive for this trip — and honestly, there was already so much to experience without it.
One of my favorite moments happened after our snorkeling trip. We moored the boat at a remote beach and spent the evening watching the sunset around a campfire with the ocean breeze around us. Our guide even prepared freshly grilled chicken and fish on the barbecue, which we enjoyed by the fire while the sky turned pink and orange. No schedules. Nowhere to be. Nothing to rush. It felt like the definition of relaxing island life.
Belize reminded me that a trip doesn’t need to be long to feel life-changing. One moment you’re climbing through caves deep in the jungle, and the next you’re floating in turquoise water watching the sunset with sandy feet. Adventure and relaxation exist side by side here — and that’s exactly what made this trip so special.
